Allumeria Tools Progression
Pickaxes first, novelty guns never first.
Tools are the real Allumeria skill tree. Weapons brag. Pickaxes open chapters. If you remember one ranking from this wiki, remember this ladder. It is written for Early Access 0.15 and assumes you already survived the getting started night.
S-tier tools (always craft)
Flint Pickaxe — The on-switch. Five Flint, five Planks, Workbench. Mines stone and coal. Without it you are a punch game.
Copper Pickaxe — First ore pick. Copper is the forest default. Craft before Copper Sword if the sun is high.
Forest Pickaxe — Chest loot from the Forest Dungeon central chamber, not a starting recipe. Breaks Undergrowth Rock. Dynamite does not. This single tool is why the Forest Dungeon walkthrough is not optional.
Forest Hammer — Forest Ingots. Required to hammer forest dungeon bricks after 0.13. Skip it and the dungeon chews you via mechanics you cannot legally delete.
Cobalt Pickaxe — Snow metal. Craft before you live on permafrost. Gold is common in snow; cobalt is the actual upgrade path.
Palladium Pickaxe — Desert cap for 0.15. If the worm chapter is open, this is the last ore tool you need in this Early Access slice.
A-tier: the honest middle
Flint Axe — Trees are faster, which means benches and torches are faster. Craft beside the pickaxe.
Iron Pickaxe / Silver Pickaxe — Forest midgame. Iron is the first “this cave is mine” feeling. Silver bridges into snow without being the snow metal.
Gold Pickaxe — Strong, but gold veins are a snow story. Do not derail a forest run hunting gold because the name sounds best.
Copper Axe / Forest Axe — Quality-of-life. Axes never outrank the next pickaxe.
B-tier: useful sidegrades
Bucket (empty, water, lava) — Terraforming and lava-grid farms. Not a weapon.
Sponge / Lava Sponge — Mistake erasers. Pack one in snow melt rooms.
Crowbar — Themed breaker. Does not replace hammers or pickaxes.
Decoration Station / Paint Roller — Base tools. They will not mine palladium. They will make building sessions worth recording.
C-tier: wait
Gold tools before iron — Ego crafting. You will stall copper caves for a shiny head.
Duplicate novelty tools — Extra flint axes when you already have copper waste inventory. Keep a backup in co-op only; see multiplayer.
D-tier: traps
Explosives as Undergrowth keys — Patched. Stop.
Allumerium tool dreams — Allumerium is not a tool metal. It is token value and special crafts. Smelting it like iron is a misunderstanding of the crafting guide.
Skipping flint for “I will find copper in five minutes” — Night will find you first.
Practical order
Flint pickaxe and axe → copper pickaxe → iron → silver → Forest Hammer and Forest Pickaxe from the dungeon → cobalt in snow → palladium in desert. Weapons from the weapons tier list fill leftover ingots. Armour pieces follow the same metals; helmets do not mine ore.
By-hand breaking exists for some soft blocks. It is not a strategy. The progression checklist repeats this ladder as boxes you can tick. If a patch adds a fourth metal, it will insert after palladium or as a new biome set, announced on the Updates Hub, not as a silent inventory icon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What is the first tool I should craft?
A Flint Pickaxe on a Workbench, then an axe. The getting started guide shows the exact first-hour order.
Is gold the best tool metal?
No. Gold is strong but snow-common. Cobalt and palladium outrank it in later chapters. Forest tools are a dungeon set, not the cap.
Why does my pickaxe not break Undergrowth Rock?
You need the Forest Pickaxe from the Forest Dungeon chest. Regular metals and bombs are not enough after 0.13.
Do I need a Forest Hammer?
Yes, if you want to process forest dungeon bricks legally. It is an anti-cheese tool added in the 0.13 rework.
